The Toronto Blue Jays have a chance to win their second consecutive series for the first time in 2026.
Friday’s series opener didn’t go to plan, with the Blue Jays dropping an 8-6 decision to the Cleveland Guardians thanks to a tough start from Max Scherzer. They responded in Saturday’s game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and eventually winning 5-3 thanks to Louis Varland’s second career save.
After taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels during the week, the Blue Jays now have a chance to win two straight series, a first for the 2026 season. As you likely recall, the Jays won their first series, a sweep of the Athletics, to begin their season. They then dropped their next six series.
Dylan Cease was initially set to start this game for the Blue Jays, but was pushed back a day to pitch against the Boston Red Sox in the series opener. Instead, Patrick Corbin will get the ball in the series finale. His first start in a Blue Jays uniform, which was at Rogers Centre, saw him go four innings with four earned runs allowed. Corbin’s last two starts saw him combine for 10.2 innings pitched, with two earned runs allow and nine strikeouts.
The Guardians’ starter on Sunday, Slade Cecconi, has the worst numbers of the five pitchers in their rotation. Through five starts this season, the 26-year-old has a 6.20 ERA and 5.99 FIP in 24.2 innings pitched, with a 17.4 K% and 10.4 BB%. The Blue Jays have never faced Cecconi.
In fact, he’s only pitched against the organization twice, making two starts against the High-A Vancouver Canadians in 2021 when he was still with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The only big leaguer who has faced Cecconi is Lenyn Sosa, who has hit a home run off the righty.
Yohendrick Piñango will make his big league debut in this game. Acquired in the Nate Pearson trade ahead of the 2024 trade deadline, the left-handed batting outfielder broke out last season and began the 2026 season slashing .288/.370/.488 with three home runs in 92 plate appearances with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Piñango will play left field and bat seventh.
With George Springer still out, Ernie Clement will lead off the game for the Blue Jays. For the first time in over a week, Daulton Varsho hits in the two-hole, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats third as always. Jesús Sánchez hits in the cleanup spot.
Kazuma Okamoto has hit three home runs since last Sunday, and he bats fifth in this game. Sosa, the lone batter in the Blue Jays’ lineup to have faced Cecconi, bats sixth. Rounding out the bottom of their lineup, Davis Schneider bats eighth and rookie catcher Brandon Valenzuela bats ninth.
Let’s set up the series finale as the Blue Jays hope to take the series.
