Addison Barger is back to slugging baseballs again.
The recovering 26-year-old Barger, who’s been sidelined since April 7 due to a left ankle sprain, officially began his rehab assignment on Sunday, going 1-for-2 with a two-run blast and a walk across three plate appearances with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays.
He grounded out in his first at-bat before homering in his next trip to the plate, ambushing a middle-middle sinker that left the yard at TD Ballpark in right-centre, leaving his bat at 101.4 m.p.h.
Barger, who earned a four-pitch walk in his final plate appearance on the afternoon, served as the designated hitter for Dunedin as the organization eased him back into game competition. He’ll likely require a few additional rehab games before rejoining the Blue Jays off the IL, which could occur as early as Friday after the team returns home from its current road trip.
They’ll need to see him play the field before then, meaning he’ll probably start in right field during one of his next appearances. It’s unclear if his rehab assignment will eventually move to Triple-A Buffalo or will remain with Dunedin ahead of his major league return.
The left-handed-hitting slugger has been recovering in Florida for nearly a month, progressing from his ankle injury down at the club’s player development complex before being cleared to begin a rehab assignment. He had been facing live pitching and participating in fielding, throwing and baserunning drills.
Prior to hitting the shelf, Barger had recorded just one hit in 19 at-bats with the Blue Jays before injuring both ankles while running to first base in Chicago versus the White Sox on April 5.
In Barger’s absence, multiple players have rotated through right field, including Nathan Lukes (who’s now on the IL himself after injuring his left hamstring), Myles Straw and Jesús Sánchez.
