The Toronto Blue Jays’ addition to their bullpen when rosters expand appears to be waiting in the wings.
On Sunday, Joe Mantiply made his fifth rehab outing and third in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons, as he attempts to return from left knee surgery.
Mantiply entered with two outs in the top of the fourth inning during the Bisons’ 9-7 loss against the Rochester Red Wings. The left-hander turned in a pitching line of 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, and threw 12 pitches (seven strikes) in the outing.
Cayden Wallace, whom Mantiply entered the game to face, greeted him rudely as the Red Wings second baseman roped a 1-1, 88.4 MPH sinker down the left-field line for a double.
With a runner on second and two out, Mantiply and Leandro Pineda engaged in a six-pitch battle that eventually saw the Red Wings right fielder win for a walk. Mantiply got ahead in the count 0-2 before Pineda laid off four straight pitches to draw the free pass.
In a dangerous situation and with the Bisons already trailing 7-3, Mantiply got ahead 0-2 in the count against his next batter, Liover Peguero. With his 0-2 offering, Mantiply turned to a 79.8 MPH changeup, which resulted in a groundout to third baseman Lenyn Sosa to end the threat.
Now appearing to be back to full health, Mantiply looks like he’ll be one of the two names added to the Blue Jays’ roster on September 1 when rosters expand from 26 to 28. After signing a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays this offseason, Mantiply appeared in 17 games before the injury and went 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.
After allowing three earned runs in his second outing with the club, 14 of Mantiply’s next 15 appearances were scoreless, including six shutout frames during the month of May in which he limited opponents to a .200 average.
