The Blue Jays have cleared two spots on the 40-man roster to make way for their new acquisitions.
Not long after news broke that the Jays were acquiring relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop, the club announced Andrew Vasquez had been claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies.
The club has also DFA’d Anthony Banda, who they brought in not long ago as an extra arm in the pen.
Vasquez, 28, signed as a free agent with the Jays ahead of this season but threw just 6 2/3 innings allowing six earned runs.
Banda faced similar struggles. The Jays grabbed him after the Pittsburgh Pirates DFA’d him, and Banda threw 6 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs.
Getting rid of Vasquez and Banda opens up two spots on the 40-man roster which will immediately be filled by Bass and Pop. This is a significant upgrade to the depth of the Blue Jays ‘pen as neither Vasquez nor Banda were able to successfully eat innings.
