Toronto Blue Jays prospect Jay Harry is currently working himself into “call him up” territory.
On Saturday, the 23-year-old utility player matched his career high, smacking his 12th home run of the season. He also hit a double and two singles, giving him his third four-hit game this season, and second since June 19th.
I’ve been writing about prospects for over five years now for Blue Jays Nation, and I’m not sure I’ve seen a season quite like Harry is having. Statistically, he’s putting himself inline for a call-up sooner rather than later, slashing .341/.378/.619 with those 12 home runs in 239 plate appearances, split between Double-A and Triple-A.
But the thing is, it’s how much he’s improved in such a short period of time. The Jays acquired a handful of notable names before the 2024 trade deadline, Harry was not one of those notable names in the first season and a bit after joining the Jays. Acquired in the Trevor Richards trade, he finished the season slashing .210/.259/.420 with four home runs in 108 plate appearances.
Last season, he split his time between High-A and Double-A, slashing .199/.284/.288 with five home runs in 366 plate appearances, good for just a 65 wRC+. And that was after a good start to his season. Coming into this season, he was positioned to be minor league depth.
Now at the end of June, he’s been one of the organization’s best hitters in 2026.
Other notes…
Harry’s home run came in the top of the first, on just the second pitch of the game. Je’Von Ward hit his eighth home run of the season in the top of the second, followed by an RBI single by Harry. Over the course of the next seven innings, the Iowa Cubs overcame the deficit, sending the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth, the Buffalo Bisons exploded for six runs. Josh Rivera, another player acquired ahead of the 2024 trade deadline, hit his 10 home run of the season. Jonatan Clase hit his eight double in what was a 9-3 victory.
THREE RUN BOMB FROM RIVERA IN THE 11TH
Rivera is another player who’s had a bit of a breakout season, albeit his wRC+ sits below 100. The shortstop has already hit a career-high home run total, and is the seventh Blue Jays prospect to reach double-digit long balls. Grant Rogers had an okay outing coming off the development list, giving up three earned runs in five innings of work.
The Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats played a doubleheader, splitting the two games with the Somerset Patriots. Six Blue Jays’ prospects hit a double in the first game, with none bigger than Hedbert Perez’s walk-off two-bagger for the victory. Jorge Burgos, Victor Arias, Carter Cunningham, Dub Gleed, and Aaron Parker all hit doubles as well, while Cutter Coffey and Cade Doughty hit triples.
Hedbert is the hero! WALK-OFF DOUBLE!
On the mound, Austin Cates gave up four earned runs, four hits, and four walks in five innings of work, also striking out four batters. Not his greatest start, but did enough to get the job done.
Danny Thompson Jr. started the second game and had another terrific outing. Over five innings, he allowed his first and only earned run against in Double-A, with the Patriots getting three hits of the 2025 draftee. Thompson Jr. struck out five, giving him a 0.64 ERA and 3.15 FIP in 14 innings (three starts) since joining the Fisher Cats.
It was a quiet game for their bats, though, as Arias’ solo home run in the third inning stood as their only hit in the seven-inning affair. That was Arias’ seventh of the season, as he’s now batting .254/.312/.486 in 154 Double-A plate appearances.
Both of the Blue Jays’ low minor teams lost as well. The Vancouver Canadians were defeated 7-4, while the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays lost 8-0.
In the C’s game, Edward Duran hit his first homer of the season, while Maddox Latta and Jacob Sharp hit doubles. It was another tough start for Landen Maroudis, giving up three earned runs in two innings of work. The right-handed pitcher is now 0-7 with a 7.52 ERA.
As for the D-Jays, they mustered just two hits, with Blaine Bullard and Austin Smith each hitting a single. On the mound, Troy Guthrie gave up seven runs over five innings of work, although only four were earned.
The Blue Jays other Florida-based team lost as well, as the Florida Complex League Blue Jays fell 3-2 to the FCL Yankees. Outfielder Pascual Archila hit his fifth home run of the season in a two-hit game, he’s quickly becoming a prospect to keep an eye on. Max Viera went 3-3 with a double, and Edgardo Villegas also hit a double.
Lastly, both Dominican Summer League teams were in action. The DSL Blue Jays Red defeated the DSL Giants Black by a score of 11-8, while the DSL Blue Jays Blue beat the DSL Giants Orange with an 8-4 score.
In the DSL Red win, Luis Nunez hit two doubles, while Alex Linares hit his third of the season. Fayon Dumorne closed out the game, blowing a save but picking up a win thanks to four strikeouts over three and two-thirds scoreless innings.
As for the other DSL game, Luis Felipe hit his first career home run, becoming the fourth Blue Jays’ DSL player to go deep this season. Michael Mesa and Fabian Gonzalez each hit their seventh double of the season as well.
