The Toronto Blue Jays have made another roster move.
On Friday, before the series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, the Blue Jays announced they recalled right-hander John Klein from Triple-A Buffalo and he will be active for tonight’s contest.
Klein was acquired at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins as part of the return for former closer Jeff Hoffman. Klein was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo following the acquisition, and across eight games (five starts) with the club, he has posted a 7.66 ERA and a 2.01 WHIP. Klein has struck out 21 batters across 22.1 innings pitched and has been hit at a .311 clip.
Before being acquired by the Blue Jays, Klein made his MLB debut with the Twins this season, with that appearance coming on May 2 against Toronto. The 24-year-old pitched in three games out of the Twins’ bullpen this season and went 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Klein struck out two across 4.1 innings and limited opponents to a .214 average.
Klein has the ability to provide length out of the Blue Jays’ bullpen and could be an option at any point this weekend to cover multiple frames. Listed as the Blue Jays’ No. 29-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, Klein has a five-pitch mix with a fastball that sits just under 95 MPH on average.
In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays optioned right-hander CJ Van Eyk to Spring Training Complex. Barring any injuries, Van Eyk finishes his rookie season with the Blue Jays by appearing in five games (one start) and going 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Van Eyk struck out three batters across 11.2 innings and allowed opponents to hit .300.
Van Eyk made his first career major-league start on Wednesday in the second game of the doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. The 28-year-old turned in a pitching line of 5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K and threw 84 pitches, the most during any of his big-league outings this season.
A former 2020 second-round pick, Van Eyk spent the majority of the season in Buffalo. Across 24 games (18 starts) with the Bisons this season, Van Eyk went 7-5 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP across 112 innings.
