Prior to Friday’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre, the Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move.
A few hours before game time, the team announced that Simeon Woods Richardson has reported to the team and will be active for Friday evening’s game. To make room on the 26-manr roster, Chad Dallas was optioned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
The Blue Jays acquired Woods Richardson from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night in exchange for cash considerations, a few days after he was DFA’d by the American League Central team. So far this season, Woods Richardson has a 0-7 record, 7.74 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over his first 12 outings (10 starts).
The addition to the Blue Jays’ roster is a homecoming of sorts for Woods Richardson. The now 25-year-old was brought into the organization on July 28, 2019, alongside Anthony Kay in exchange for pitcher Marcus Stroman.
Woods Richardson reached as high as Double-A within the Blue Jays’ farm system and was rated as the Blue Jays’ fourth-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline during the 2021 season. On July 30, 2021, the Blue Jays dealt Woods Richardson to the Twins with Austin Martin in exchange for José Berríos.
For his career, Woods Richardson holds a record of 12-17, a 4.76 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP over 65 outings (61 starts). With the Blue Jays’ pitching staff being in dire need of length, Woods Richardson should provide some in whatever capacity manager John Schneider chooses to use him.
In a corresponding move, right-hander Chad Dallas was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Dallas was selected to the Blue Jays’ 26-man roster prior to the series finale in Atlanta and impressed during his MLB debut.
Dallas picked up the win after entering in the bottom of the second inning and turning in a pitching line of 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K against the mighty Braves lineup. Dallas threw 68 pitches during his outing, and with a bullpen day coming up on Saturday and Dallas being unavailable for a few days, getting a fresh arm up with the big-league club made sense.
The 25-year-old, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 draft and will return to Buffalo with a 2.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP to his name. In 10 games (eight starts) with the Bisons this season, Dallas holds a 0-3 record, 4.50 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 36 innings pitched.
With Dallas’ strong showing and the unpredictability of health in MLB, he feels like a strong bet to receive another opportunity with the Blue Jays should the right opportunity present itself.
