The Toronto Blue Jays have released a handful of notable players over the past week or so.
On Tuesday, the team’s transaction page noted that Riley Tirotta, Brennan Orf, Michael Plassmeyer, Jesse Hahn, and Hayden Gilliland have been released. Additionally, David Beckles was released on Sunday.
Tirotta is the most notable of the bunch, as it looked like he was on the cusp of the big leagues. Last season with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, the utility player slashed .268/.359/.417 with 12 home runs in 463 plate appearances, good for a 112 wRC+.
The 27-year-old positioned himself to be a potential callup thanks to back-to-back strong seasons, but got off to a slow start in 2026, slashing .193/.298/.363 with seven home runs in 198 plate appearances with the Bisons. Tirotta’s strikeout rate has always been high, but with the ability to play numerous positions, he shouldn’t have an issue finding a new organization.
Back in 2023, the Blue Jays selected Orf in the 13th round after he slashed .351/.506/.759 with 19 home runs in 253 plate appearances for Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville). Unfortunately, the outfielder couldn’t stay healthy, with his 246 plate appearances in 2024 being the most in a single season.
Through 33 games with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, Orf slashed .216/.386/.353 with a home run in 132 plate appearances, good for a 113 wRC+.
Gilliland, Orf’s teammate with the Canadians, signed with the Jays back in the summer of 2024. The catcher split his 129 plate appearances in 2025 between the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, Canadians, and Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. In 115 plate appearances with the Canadians in 2025, he slashed .228/.374/.380 with three home runs.
Beckles is the other released prospect, and he was instrumental in helping the Florida Complex League Blue Jays win their first championship. In 237 plate appearances, the first baseman slashed .304/.388/.483 with eight home runs for a 145 wRC+. Unfortunately, that success didn’t carry over to Single-A, where the 22-year-old is slashing just .210/.350/.284 with one home run in 100 plate appearances.
Plassmeyer and Hahn are two experienced pitchers who spent this season with the Bisons. The former pitched 24.2 in Triple-A, where he has a 1.82 ERA and 4.89 FIP in 20 games. Plassmeyer got a cup of tea in the big leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022 and 2023.
Hahn, 36, made his big league debut in 2014, but never appeared in more than 18 games in a season. His best year was with the Kansas City Royals in 2020, authoring a 0.52 ERA and 2.56 FIP in 17.1 innings pitched. After just five outings in 2021, Hahn didn’t pitch in the big leagues again until 2025 with the Seattle Mariners.
With the Bisons, Hahn had a 6.65 ERA and 6.14 FIP in 21.2 innings pitched, alongside a 21.7 K% and 16 BB%.
