Blue Jays select Brett Bateman’s contract, place Luis Urías on 10-day injured list

The Toronto Blue Jays made a handful of roster moves on Friday afternoon.
A few hours before the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Jays announced that they’ve selected the contract of Brett Bateman, and he’ll be active for the game.
To make room for him on the 26-man roster, the Blue Jays placed Luis Urías on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain. Rudy Martin Jr. was designated for assignment to make room for Bateman on the 40-man roster.
Bateman was joined the Blue Jays organization on Sunday, as he was one of two players the Blue Jays acquired in the Kevin Gausman trade. The 24-year-old made his organizational debut on Wednesday, playing two games with the Buffalo Bisons before the call-up.
In his debut, Bateman walked twice and scored the game-winning, walk-off run in the ninth inning. On Thursday, he went 2-5 and made a highlight reel catch, which surely played a factor in the centre fielder receiving the call to make his big league debut.

Urías hit a double in Thursday’s game against the Cubs, and pulled up midway between first and second grimacing. He remained in the game for the rest of the half inning, but was replaced in the field after he was left stranded. Though the Jays replaced him with an outfielder, they have enough positional versatility to make it work. Davis Schneider could get more looks at second base, where Urías mainly played.
As for Martin Jr., the Blue Jays claimed him off waivers on July 23rd. Also a left-handed batting outfielder, the 30-year-old has yet to make his big league debut and is slashing .250/.368/.250 with no home runs in 39 plate appearances with the Bisons.
We’ll see if Bateman is in the starting lineup today, but expect him and Myles Straw to platoon centre field for the remainder of the season.
