The Toronto Blue Jays have a few key players heading to free agency in Bo Bichette, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, Seranthony Dominguez, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Ty France. The list got a little bigger yesterday evening as well, as a couple of minor leaguers will be testing the free agent waters alongside the group listed above.
Southpaw Ryan Borucki and infielder Michael Stefanic will be heading to the open market this winter, per the Minor League transactions page. Both spent a handful of games on the big league roster this season.
Borucki, a former Blue Jays prospect who spent five seasons with the Blue Jays, was picked on a MiLB deal in late August after he was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He would appear in four games for the Jays this year, allowing just three hits with zero walks and zero runs across 4 1/3 innings while striking out five. His time on the roster was limited after the Jays called up top prospect Trey Yesavage from the minor leagues, with Borucki being designated for assignment and finishing the year in the Jays’ farm system.
Michael Stefanic signed a minor league deal with the Jays this past winter and was called up to the big league squad on May 9th when the Jays needed some help off the bench.
He would play in limited action for just over a month with Toronto, appearing in nine games and collecting four hits through 22 at-bats while walking three times. Stefanic spent most of the campaign in triple-A Buffalo, where he produced a .287/.403/.383 slash line with a .786 OPS. While he didn’t hit for much power, he walked 59 times compared to 44 strikeouts and chipped in with 17 doubles and six home runs before the season’s end.
