Blue Jays: Shane Bieber allows two runs and struck out six in latest rehab outing

Shane Bieber is inching ever so closer to making his Toronto Blue Jays’ debut.
On Saturday afternoon, the 30-year-old righty made his second start with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons since the trade, going five and two-thirds innings with two earned runs allowed, one walk, and six strikeouts.
In the first inning, Bieber allowed a lead-off single, but followed it up with a flyout and two groundouts to get out of the inning. The following inning saw Bieber generate another groundout before striking out Mikey Romero and Trayce Thompson to end the inning.
Moving to the third, Bieber got his fourth groundout, but dealt with some traffic as Seby Zavala and Nick Sogard hit back-to-back doubles, cutting the Bisons’ lead in half. Thankfully, another groundout and a lineout kept the Bisons’ lead intact.
The fourth inning saw a lead-off groundout, followed by a strikeout of  Nate Eaton and Romero for the second time in the game. In the bottom of the fifth, the Worcester Woo Sox tied the game thanks to a Nathan Hickey home run, but Bieber struck out Zavala. This was also the inning where Bieber gave up a walk while getting a groundout and a flyout.
Starting the sixth inning, Bieber struck out Kristian Campbell for his sixth K of the game, followed by another groundout. Sadly, he didn’t earn a quality start, as he was pulled from the game after going over his pitch limit of 75.
Overall, Bieber finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, throwing 54 strikes on 78 pitches. Diving deeper into his Baseball Savant numbers, Bieber’s fastball averaged 92.7 mph, maxing out at 93.9 mph. He threw 25 four-seam fastballs, 26 sliders, 16 cutters, and a handful of knuckle curveballs and changeups.
His best pitch by far was the slider, as it got 17 total swings with eight swing and misses. The cutter was also effective, getting four whiffs on nine total swings. Bieber’s fastball didn’t do much in terms of swing and miss, getting one whiff on 11 total swings. However,  he earned eight called strikes with the pitch.
Bieber is expected to get another rehab start, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. Assuming all goes well, it seems like joining the Blue Jays’ rotation is the next step.
