With a rotation of the fritz, the Toronto Blue Jays are turning to a bullpen day on Wednesday.
Following Tuesday’s loss to the Kansas City Royals, Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling reported that Spencer Miles will start for the team on Wednesday evening.
Shane Bieber was originally going to start this game, but he was placed on the 15-day injured list before Tuesday’s game due to right teres major inflammation. This will be Miles’ fifth start fifth in 41 appearances, and the first time he’s started a game since he did so against the Chicago White Sox on July 17th.
As a starter, Miles has given up 14 earned runs over 14 innings of work, with nine strikeouts and three walks. But as a whole, the 26-year-old has a 3.02 ERA and 2.86 FIP in 80.1 innings of work over 40 games. Following Miles will be Simeon Woods Richardson, who is set to pitch the bulk of the innings. This season, Woods Richardson has a 1.04 ERA with 13 strikeouts across 17.1 innings of work, but has walked 10 batters across that stretch.
On Thursday, Spencer Arrighetti will make his first start as a Blue Jay after appearing in his first game last Friday at Yankee Stadium. Over three and one-third innings, Arrighetti gave up three earned runs and struck out four, being tagged with the loss.
Coming off a 4-1 loss to Kansas City, and now sitting three games back of the final wild card spot, every single inning and game matters if the team wants to make a strong finish the next 29 games. Will they sink or will they swim? Only time will tell.
