In the end, the Toronto Blue Jays ended up winning a defensive award.
Despite all five of their Gold Glove finalists failing to win the award, Major League Baseball announced on Friday evening that the Blue Jays won the Team Gold Glove award for the American League.
This is the third time in the last four seasons that the Blue Jays won the award, doing so in both 2023 and 2024. Since the award was created for the 2020 season, it’s the first time an American League team has won the award with a player on the team failing to win an individual Gold Glove. However, the 2023 Milwaukee Brewers also won the Team Gold Glove award with no player winning an individual Gold Glove.
The National League winners, the Chicago Cubs, are also now three-time winners of the award, winning it last year, as well as the inaugural Team Gold Glove back during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
As a whole, the Blue Jays finished with 51 Defensive Runs Saved, 14 Outs Above Average, and 46 Fielding Run Value. Their DRS ranked sixth in MLB and third among American League teams and their OAA ranked tied for 11th in MLB, but fifth in the AL.
Where the Blue Jays excelled defensively was in the FRV stat, as their 46 FRV ranked tied for second-best in MLB and top in the AL. In fact, the next closest AL team to the Blue Jays in terms of FRV were the Boston Red Sox, who finished with just 24.
Both catchers, Alejandro Kirk and Brandon Valenzuela, played a big part in their excellent FRV. That said, no Blue Jay finished with a higher FRV at their position than Andrés Giménez. The shortstop also had the highest OAA by a wide margin, as his 19 OAA was significantly better than second-placed Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 4 OAA. Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes were the lone players who finished with double-digit DRS.
Five Blue Jays were nominated for a Gold Glove this past season, Guerrero Jr. at first base, Valenzuela at catcher, Giménez at shortstop, Lukes in the outfield, and José Soriano on the mound. It’s the first time since 2020 that a Blue Jay has failed to win a Gold Glove.
