Blue Jays trade Daulton Varsho to Houston Astros in exchange for Spencer Arrighetti

The Toronto Blue Jays are moving on from their centre fielder. 
The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon is reporting that the Blue Jays have traded Daulton Varsho to the Houston Astros in exchange for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti. 
Through 99 games this season, Varsho is batting .243 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs. The 30-year-old has picked up nine steals on nine attempts and has reached base at a .307 clip. 
Acquired by the Blue Jays on December 23, 2022 from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno, Varsho has spent the past four seasons patrolling centre in a Blue Jays uniform. 
Over parts of four seasons, Varsho appeared in 464 games with the club and batted .226 with 65 home runs, 200 RBIs and produced a .292 on-base percentage. While he never reached the 27 home runs he hit during his final season with the Diamondbacks, Varsho hit at least 18 in each of his three full seasons, and smashed three during last year’s playoff run to the World Series. 
Where Varsho truly excelled during his time in Toronto was in the field. Varsho won his lone Gold Glove Award following the 2024 season after leading all MLB outfielders with a +17 Fielding Run Value. While his defence dropped off toward the end of his tenure in Toronto, which can be coupled with right rotator cuff surgery following the 2024 season, he constantly put his body on the line to help save his pitchers runs.
Arrighetti is currently in his third season with the Astros and has made 17 starts with the club this year. Through his 17 outings, the 26-year-old is 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The righty has struck out 87 batters across his 88 innings pitched. 
While Arrighetti is currently on the 15-day injured list due to right foot nerve irritation, the righty received an injection last Monday and should be able to return during August. The down period gives Arrighetti some time to reset, as after getting off to a dazzling start this season that included a 0.93 ERA during June, he was tagged for a 9.00 ERA over his past seven outings.
For his career, Arrighetti is 15-23 and has recorded a 4.66 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, and will join the Blue Jays’ organization with three options still remaining on his contract. Under team control through 2029, Arrighetti, along with the addition of José Soriano, gives the Blue Jays rotation options alongside Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, and Cody Ponce for the foreseeable future.
