Trey Yesavage has had a ton of firsts in the past month and a bit.
On Wednesday, he’ll have another first. The Toronto Blue Jays’ rookie pitcher will make his first career postseason start away from Rogers Centre, as the Jays take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series.
It’s been a whirlwind of a season for the 22-year-old. Drafted 20th overall in the 2024 draft, Yesavage began his professional career in Single-A at the start of the 2025 season. He rapidly advanced up the minor league ladder and got called up in the final two weeks of the season.
Yesavage’s first career start was on the road, pitching five innings of one-run ball against the Tampa Bay Rays. His next start was also on the road, giving up four earned runs in four innings of work against the Kansas City Royals. In his last regular season start, the Blue Jays needed a win, and he gave them just that by pitching five scoreless innings en route to finishing with the best record in the American League.
The right-handed pitcher made his first postseason start in Game 2 of the American League Divisional Series against the New York Yankees, striking out 11 batters in five and one-third hitless innings, one of the best postseason debuts in history. His second start, in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series, didn’t go so well, as he gave up five earned runs in four innings of work, tagged for the loss.
Thankfully, he rebounded in Game 6 of the ALCS when the Blue Jays needed a win to keep their season alive, giving up two earned runs in five and two-thirds innings of work, striking out seven. Yesavage has already faced the Dodgers in the World Series, giving up two earned runs in four innings of work in Game 1, another Blue Jays victory.
While Wednesday’s game isn’t a must-win, a Blue Jays win would go a long way in helping their pursuit of a third World Series. If Yesavage and the Jays can find a way to win, they’ll return to Toronto with a 3-2 series lead and two opportunities to win the World Series at home.
Hopefully, Yesavage can give them another strong start in the biggest game of not just his career, but of the 2025 season.
