Yariel Rodríguez is looking to use this winter to get back on track.
On Tuesday, Francys Romero reported that Rodríguez has signed with Indios de Mayagüez of the Puerto Rico Winter League.
Rodríguez spent the 2026 campaign between the Toronto Blue Jays and Triple-A Buffalo before seeing his season come to a close in June.
After being outrighted off the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster in December 2025, Rodríguez cleared outright waivers, which resulted in him remaining under contract with the Blue Jays for the remaining three years.
After starting the year strong in Buffalo, Rodríguez had his contract selected by the Blue Jays on May 11 and the right-hander made his debut that night, tossing a scoreless frame with two strikeouts during an 8-5 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Across 10 games with the Blue Jays this season, Rodríguez went 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP. Across 9.1 innings, Rodríguez struck out six batters and was hit at a .324 clip. Rodríguez was tagged for 11 runs (eight earned) across his 10 outings, and ended up being DFA’d on June 8.
Rodríguez was once again outrighted to Buffalo and over 13 games with the Bisons this season, the 29-year-old went 1-0 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Over 15.2 innings, Rodríguez struck out an impressive 26 batters and limited opponents to a .148 average. Rodríguez last worked on June 24 before seeing his season come to a close due to an injury.
Originally signed by the Blue Jays to a five-year, $32-million contract on February 9, 2024, Rodríguez has largely failed to live up to the expectations that came from his time in Cuba. Used as a starter during his first season in the majors, Rodríguez made 21 starts and went 1-8 with a 4.47 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.
Rodríguez threw 86.2 innings that year, as the Blue Jays monitored his workload in his first campaign in North America. In 2025, Rodríguez was used exclusively as a reliever and produced a 3.08 ERA over 66 games, but after posting a 10.13 ERA over four postseason outings, was removed from the Blue Jays’ roster ahead of the World Series.
With two years remaining on his contract, Rodríguez will need to come into spring training and need to put together a big camp if he wants to start the 2027 season in Toronto.
