Trey Yesavage throws 34 pitches in rehab outing with Triple-A Buffalo

Trey Yesavage has returned to the mound. 
On Tuesday night, Yesavage pitched for Triple-A Buffalo in what was his first game action since undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. 
During the Bisons’ 9-8 victory against the Rochester Red Wings, Yesavage turned in a pitching line of 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, and threw 34 pitches (23 strikes) in the outing. 
While the results were not pretty, Yesavage was only expected to throw in the 40 to 50 pitch range, so the 23-year-old got into the area the Blue Jays were hoping for. The goal was three innings, but the more important factor is how Yesavage feels following the outing. 
The right-hander averaged 93.3 MPH with his fastball and topped out at 94.4 MPH, so the velocity is where it needs to be for Yesavage who relies on his splitter and slider to give batters fits at the big league level. 
To open the contest, Yesavage engaged in a six-pitch battle with Red Wings leadoff batter Seaver King. After getting ahead 0-2 in the count, King worked the count full before Yesavage was able to get the shortstop to ground out to his counterpart Josh Kasevich on a 93.8 MPH fastball. 
After retiring King, Yesavage issued a nine-pitch walk to former Toronto Blue Jay Buddy Kennedy to put a runner on first with one away. With Kennedy on first, Yesavage got ahead of Trey Lipscomb to fly out to centre fielder Daz Cameron on a 94.2 MPH fastball. 
With two outs, third baseman Cayden Wallace stepped up and drilled a fastball from Yesavage into the right centre gap to bring home Kennedy and give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. 
Up next was another former Blue Jay, designated hitter Riley Adams. After getting into a full count, Adams tagged a fastball into left field to bring home Wallace and put an end to Yesavage’s night. 
Following this outing, Yesavage will join the Blue Jays before deciding on next steps. If everything stays according to plan, the right-hander is likely to be activated from the injured list for an outing Monday when the Blue Jays open a series against the Baltimore Orioles. 
Currently, the Blue Jays’ rotation consists of Dylan Cease, José Soriano, Max Scherzer, and two bullpen days. The return of Yesavage would be a boost to the club in whatever capacity that may be. 
Through 18 games this season, Yesavage is 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Yesavage has struck out 91 batters across 93.2 innings pitched and held opponents to a .185 average.
