To the surprise of no one, veteran shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who didn’t appear in a spring training game due to bone spurs in his heel, has been placed on the 60-day disabled list to start the season. It was confirmed this morning by Ross Atkins on FAN590.

I guess this is the seventh act to our increasingly epic Greek Tragedy.

To give everyone a quick refresher, this began at the very beginning of spring training when it was reported that the veteran shortstop had bone spurs removed from his heel and it wasn’t an issue. Minutes after that, it was reported that he was dealing with a bone spur in his heel and that he might have a delayed start to camp. A few days later, John Gibbons praised Gift Ngoepe and said he he could be a good replacement if Tulo started the year on the DL. It was announced that he wouldn’t be ready to start the season and then, finally, he was placed on the 60-day disabled list. (It’s all broken down here)

Boy, have we come a long way from “bone spurs were removed and it isn’t an issue.” I wrote about Tulo’s injury update last week and it sounded absolutely terrible. He can’t put weight down on his foot without feeling an intense amount of pain and things haven’t improved since the beginning of spring training. Given that outlook, I’m skeptical we’ll see Tulo until the middle of summer. To be honest, I’m gearing myself up for an injury that eats up his entire 2018 season.

This will open up a spot of the 40-man roster for Tyler Clippard or John Axford, both of whom are on minor league deals. We know already that Gift Ngoepe is making the team, as he’s already on the 40-man and the team, I guess, deemed Danny Espinosa wasn’t a big enough upgrade for a roster move just yet.
