Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s fantastic 2024 has earned him another award.
It was announced on Thursday morning that Guerrero Jr. won the 2024 Tip O’Neill Award. This is the second time he has won it in his career, the last time being in 2021.
The award, named after Tip O’Neill, an early baseball star, is given to a Canadian player who has “excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to the highest ideal of the sport” according to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, who gives the award out annually.
Guerrero Jr. was not just the best Canadian baseball player in 2024, but one of the best in the league. The 25-year-old slashed .323/.396/.544 with 30 home runs in 697 plate appearances for a 165 wRC+ and a 5.5 fWAR. In 2021, the other year he won the award, he slashed .311/.401/.601 with 48 home runs in 698 plate appearances for a 166 wRC+ and a 6.3 fWAR.
The Tip O’Neill Award isn’t Guerrero Jr.’s only hardware this season. He was an All-Star for the fourth consecutive season, while also winning a Silver Slugger and being named to the All-MLB First Team.
Although Guerrero Jr. won the award in 2021, he wasn’t the last Blue Jay player to do so. In 2022, Markham, Ontario closer Jordan Romano became a first-time winner of the Tip O’Neill Award, as he had a 2.11 ERA and a 2.82 FIP in 64 innings pitched, with 36 saves in 42 opportunities.
For now, Romano isn’t a Blue Jay anymore as they decided to non-tender him last month. However, according to Kaitlyn McGrath of the Athletic, the Blue Jays are “heavily pursuing his return”.
As for Guerrero Jr., the 2025 season is his final under contract with the Blue Jays, as he’s entering his final arbitration year and is expected to make $29.6 million according to MLB Trade Rumors.
They need to do everything in their power to re-sign him as quickly as possible.
