The winning streak is over.
The Blue Jays went into Thursday’s game in The Bronx searching for their sixth consecutive win and a sweep over the Yankees but Gerrit Cole completely shut them down.
Things worth mentioning…
- José Berríos got tagged in the first inning for a three-run bomb by Jake Bauers and cleared through four innings before running into trouble again. He got the first two outs in the sixth inning before allowing a double to Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Berríos was pulled in favour of Tim Mayza who allowed the run to score on a double by Estevan Florial. All told, Berrios went 5 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out six.
- That three-run knock was all Gerrit Cole needed. The $324 million man had the first Cy Young of his career well within reach and he likely wrapped things up with a dominant start on Thursday. Cole carried a perfect game into the sixth inning until Alejandro Kirk hit a double to break it up. He went eight innings and allowed one run on two hits and no walks while striking out nine.
Gerrit Cole, 96mph ⛽️ And 🤫 thru 5
- It’s unfortunate that the bullpen couldn’t slam the door after Berríos came out of the game because the bats put together a bit of a rally in the last two innings. Matt Chapman doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, the lone run allowed by Cole, and a couple of singles, a walk, and an error led to two more runs off of Clay Holmes in the ninth.
