It’s safe to say that Yariel Rodríguez is ready to come back.
The 27-year-old right-handed pitcher from Cuba absolutely dominated the Worcester Red Sox, finishing with a line of 4 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K. Rodríguez threw 67 pitches, 46 of which were strikes. He also generated a bunch of whiffs, but more on that later.
Worcester’s first batter, Nick Sogard, reached with a single, before Nick Yorke walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, Rodríguez was able to get out of it, striking out Nathan Hickey and Niko Kavadas before generating a fly out by Mickey Gasper. This was one of two outs that weren’t registered via a strikeout.
The second inning posed no issues for Rodríguez, as he struck out Eddy Alavrez (not the former UFC fighter), Karson Simas, and Mark Contreras, all swinging to end the second. Rodríguez allowed a single to Corey Rosier to lead off the third inning, but he struck out Sogard again, before Rosier was thrown out attempting to get to third. Yorke struck out for the final out.
In his final inning, Rodríguez struck out Hickey and Kavadas for the second time, before Gasper reached with a single. Damiano Palmegiani nearly caught the ball, but it got by him into left field. It didn’t matter, as Rodríguez struck out Alavarez again to end the inning.

Diving deeper….

That may be Rodríguez’s best start since joining the organization. The fastball averaged 92.3 mph, two mph down from his velocity in the big leagues, but he maxed out at 95.1 mph./ Even then, the fastball was fantastic, generating four whiffs on nine total swing for a 44 whiff%.
The worst pitch was his curveball, which he threw 19 times, generating just one whiff on six total swings. However, his slider generated three whiffs on the three swings it got, while the splitter generated four whiffs on six total swings.
Overall, his 12 whiffs will likely end up leading the game, and he had a crazy 50 whiff%. Easily his best start in the organization.
