It was a rough rehab outing for a Blue Jay pitcher.

On Tuesday evening, Yariel Rodríguez made the start for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, pitching less than an inning and giving up an unearned run. Overall, he finished with a line of 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, leaving his season ERA in Triple-A at 0.

The first batter he faced, former Toronto farmhand Austin Martin, reached on a fielding error by Will Robertson. The next batter, DaShawn Keirsey Jr. reached on a single and stole third, before Michael Helman walked. Martin was driven in on a sacrifice fly from Matt Wallner, making it a 1-0 game.
Rodríguez threw just 16 pitches, nine four-seam fastballs, five sliders, and one splitter and curveball. He generated a whiff on one total swing from the slider, while the fastball had two total swings and the other two pitches also generated one swing. As for the velocity, the fastball sat 93.3 mph and maxed out at 94.6 mph, one mph down from his season average.

In late April, the 27-year-old righty was placed on the 15-day Injured List due to “thoracic spine inflammation”, which sounds incredibly painful. Prior to the injury, the Cuban-native had a 4.11 ERA and a 4.52 FIP in 15.1 innings pitched, with all four of his appearances being starts. Moreover, he had a 22.2 K% and an 11.1 BB%.
He isn’t the only Blue Jay pitcher on a rehab assignment with the Bisons, as fellow starter/long-man/spot starter Bowden Francis has made two appearances in his rehab assignment with Buffalo. Moreover, reliever Chad Green made an appearance on Sunday, pitching a scoreless outing while giving up one hit.
Unlike in 2023, the Blue Jays pitching staff hasn’t been healthy all at one time, and it has resulted in one of the worst bullpen in the league this season. Although Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah missed most of Spring Training, they’ve really rounded into form as of late.
Hopefully, Rodríguez, Francis, and Green’s rehab appearances continue to go well, and that they can turn this season around once they return.
