For much of the 2026 season, the Toronto Blue Jays’ offence felt like it was just waiting for the big hit.
While the offence never was able to put it together for prolonged stretches, Yohendrick Piñango provided a spark during his rookie season in the majors.
How the year went
After opening the season in Triple-A Buffalo, Piñango had his contract selected on April 25 after Nathan Lukes was forced to the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Acquired alongside Josh Rivera from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Nate Pearson, Piñango was the Blue Jays’ No. 10-ranked prospect at the time of his call-up.
Piñango ended up making his big-league debut a day later, batting seventh and playing left field during a 4-2 victory against the Cleveland Guardians. After flying out in his first at-bat, Piñango lined a single up the middle off Slade Cecconi for his first MLB hit.
After receiving only six at-bats to close out April, Piñango opened May by ripping off a four-game hit streak, a stretch which included two three-hit performances, first against the Minnesota Twins on May 1, and then again against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 4.
Piñango continued to showcase an ability to slash line drives all over the field, highlighted by 14 hits over his first 14 career games. On May 16, Piñango delivered his first big moment in a Blue Jays uniform during a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
After Casey Mize delivered six scoreless innings, A.J. Hinch turned to Kyle Finnegan to open the top of the seventh. Piñango stepped to the plate to lead off the frame and drilled a first-pitch splitter 348 feet over the right field wall for his first major-league home run, and was a key factor in the Blue Jays pulling out an extra-innings victory to improve to 20-25.
Over the month of May, Piñango batted .291 with three home runs and 15 RBIs. The 24-year-old continued to force his way into the Blue Jays’ lineup as manager John Schneider looked for any solution to a slumping offence.
Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Piñango displayed some growing pains in the outfield. Piñango only committed one error, but produced a minus-5 Fielding Run Value, the second-worst, trailing only former Blue Jay Jesús Sánchez. Piñango’s fielding was ultimately the reason he was optioned to Buffalo multiple times throughout the season.
Piñango saw time with the Blue Jays in both June and July, but his playing time decreased as the outfielder’s bat cooled off. With an outfield group that consisted of veterans for most of the season, Piñango was better served receiving regular at-bats and reps in the field with the Bisons.
Piñango finished the year by appearing in 58 games and batted .260 with five home runs and 20 RBIs. The 24-year-old reached base at a .306 clip and will play in the Venezuelan Winter League this offseason as he looks to continue his development.
