Game Threat: Going for a Split? What’s That?! Red Sox (9-6) @ Blue Jays (3-11)

Can the Blue Jays get back-to-back wins for the first time this season? Chris Sale might have something to say about it.

And now, the lineups…

Blue Jays

Marco Estrada: 18 IP, 3.50 ERA, 8.0 H9, 1.5 HR9, 3.5 BB9, 8.5 SO9

Red Socks

Chris Sale: 21 2/3 IP, 1.25 ERA, 4.6 H9, 0.4 HR9, 2.1 BB9, 12.0 SO9

Yesterday was the game against the Cy Young winner, but let’s be honest, Chris Sale is the truly terrifying pitcher in this Red Sox rotation. He’s been absolutely absurd so far this season, holding opponents to a hit every second inning while striking out 12 per nine. Marco Estrada will start for the Jays, and will need another dominant performance like his one on Saturday against the Orioles in order for the team to pull one out today.

I am optimistic that today is the day our offence breaks out, Sale or no Sale.

I am also optimistic that today is the day Gameday doesn’t have multi-inning glitches that make me wonder what the fuck is going on in the game and force me to get game updates on Twitter.

My optimism may not be infectious.

I’m glad Estrada is on the mound for this one! I understand why you’ve ditched the game recaps, but I liked them, fwiw. A win here could go a long way towards building some momentum.

I was kinda hoping that Estrada could shut the Sox offence down and that we could take this one if we can score a single run off Sale.

Two innings in, with Sale at 19 pitches (17 for strikes), I realize I’m probably asking too much of the offence.

Is it too much to ask for Sale to have an off-day when he plays the Jays?

We could have signed a good relief pitcher for what we’re paying Grilli. This bullpen is the worst bullpen I have ever seen in Jays history, tbh. There is literally no hope other than Osuna and Biagini everyone else is just pray and spray

    • Will Murray

Jason Grilli and his $3m should have had no bearing on the team’s ability or willingness to sign other arms for the bullpen. The end of last year was a concern, obviously, but for a team with questions in the bullpen anyways, exercising his option was the obvious move, IMO.

I was going to write about how the one thing I don’t like about Gibby is how he pulls starters early and overworks the bullpen but then I looked up Jason Grilli on Baseball Reference and he has his best numbers on zero or one days rest and gets worse the longer he doesn’t pitch.

      Go figure.

Game Recap: Estrada was awesome. Chris Sale was awesome. Osuna was not awesome then Morales was awesome.

In extra innings Brian Tallet quantum lept into Jason Grilli’s body for a purpose he’s probably just now discovering while bringing about the results you would expect from Brian Tallet.
