Birds All Day Podcast: 128. Survey Says!

The Jays season is not going so well (yet again), but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to discuss — things like: the weird survey the club sent out this week, the debut of Tom Koehler, the future of Josh Donaldson and Kendrys Morales, Youppi and Tommy Lasorda, and the glimmer of playoff hope still not quite yet extinguished!

So, you guys talked about it, I did the math quick.

Based on what he Qualifying Offer would have been following the 2010 off season if it had existed (approx. $12.4M, using salary data from stevetheump.com, which is pretty good for historical salaries), and taking the expected QO following this season ($18.1M according to Buster Onley) as the inflator, since it’s much better than using the overall average salary for inflation, I came up with $139.9M over 6 years for Donaldson as the equivalent for Beltre’s 6/$96M entering his age 32 season. Round it up for simplicity and say 6/$140M.

Am I crazy for being kind of ok with this? Especially if they can front load it to make up easier to part with on the back end if he declines fast? That’s assuming he’s willing to sing before he hits FA.
