Don’t look now, but the Toronto Blue Jays are just two games back of the New York Yankees.
On Monday, the Blue Jays picked up a huge 5-4 win against the Yankees, inching ever closer to the American League East division leaders. Game two of the four-game series is the annual Canada Day game in a packed Rogers Centre.
After leaving Monday’s game in the bottom of the sixth, George Springer returns to the Jays lineup this afternoon. Unfortunately, Bo Bichette remains out of the lineup, leaving the Jays with a fairly weak lineup against Max Fried and the Yankees.
On Tuesday, the Blue Jays optioned Jonatan Clase to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, replacing him on the 26-man roster with Leo Jimenez. The infielder started the season on the Bisons’ Injured List, and this will be his 2025 debut. He’ll play shortstop, and the Jays’ middle infield will be comprised of Jimenez and Andres Gimenez.
Davis Schneider had a good game on Monday, going 2-3 with a double and a hit by pitch. Don’t look now, but Schendier is slashing .200/.375/.300 with a home run in 64 plate appearances for a 107 wRC+.
Ernie Clement leads off once again, followed by Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Batting clean-up is Alejandro Kirk, with Schneider and Myles Straw following the Jays’ designated hitter. The bottom three in the Jays’ lineup are comprised of Andres Gimenez, Tyler Heineman, and Jimenez.
Kevin Guasman’s last turn out was one of his best of the season, as he went eight innings with no earned runs allowed. It may be a pitching duel, as the Yankees’ starter is Fried, who has a 1.92 ERA in 108 innings pitched this season.
