The Blue Jays have just recalled their last reinforcement.
With Rowdy Tellez being placed on the Injured List with a right knee sprain, the team has called up Billy McKinney from the Alternate Training Site.
Rowdy joins Bo Bichette and Teoscar Hernandez as Blue Jays’ position players on the shelf. Jonathan Davis and Santiago Espinal were called up to replace those two, so McKinney was the final position player the Jays have left on the 40-man to call up as a replacement. (There’s also Reese McGuire, but I don’t imagine having a three-man catcher platoon is an option here).
Anyways, here we are. The Blue Jays’ top three hitters in terms of on-base plus slugging percentage are now on the Injured List, so getting offence is going to be a challenge. On the bright side, Bo Bichette went 2-for-3 in a simulated game in Rochester yesterday and it seems that he’ll be ready to return when the Jays face the New York Mets this weekend.
The plan with Rowdy out is for Vlad Jr. and Travis Shaw to split time at first base, so I imagine we’ll see Santiago Espinal and Joe Panik get time at third. McKinney can also play first base, so that’s an option given the Jays have four outfielders (Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel, Derek Fisher, and Jonathan Davis) on the roster.
McKinney has just three plate appearances this season and he hit a double in two of them. Let’s hope he can continue that incredibly microscopic sample size into a hot streak!
