Mitch White is back from Triple-A as the 29th man for Tuesday’s doubleheader

The Blue Jays have called up pitcher Mitch White from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons ahead of Tuesday’s doubleheader with the Tampa Bay Rays.

White struggled in back-to-back-to-back outings, posting a 13.50 ERA over starts against the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, and Baltimore Orioles. In his most recent start, White allowed five earned runs over two-and-one-third innings against Baltimore and was optioned to the minors.

Since then, the Blue Jays have operated with a four-man starting rotation consisting of Alek Manoah, Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Ross Stripling, while using bullpen days in the middle to keep everyone on normal rest. But with a key doubleheader against the Rays on Tuesday, the Blue Jays need somebody who can provide them some length, and White is the best option in Triple-A to do so.

White didn’t make any appearances for the Bisons so, assuming he pitches at some point on Tuesday, it’ll be his first game action since September 6.

Alek Manoah will start the first game of the doubleheader and the assumption is that White will be the ‘bulk guy’ for the second game. We might see the Blue Jays opt to use an opener for an inning or two before White comes into the game to get through the middle innings.
