The Toronto Blue Jays have come to terms with five of their 19 selections from this month’s amateur draft, according to multiple outlets.
As reported by Baseball America and MLB.com, the organization has signed fifth-rounder Nolan Higgins, sixth-rounder Gable Mitchell, eighth-rounder Jake Bennett, ninth-rounder Joey Urban and 10th-rounder Bryce Chance. All five deals have reportedly come in well below their respective slot values.
Higgins, a right-handed pitcher out of Michigan State University, has agreed to a signing bonus of $2,500 — a notable under-slot signing (the 164th overall pick was valued at $421,300). The 22-year-old spent his junior season as a full-time starter, but he worked exclusively as a reliever this season, pitching to a 5.20 ERA and 3.93 FIP with a 23.8 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate across 27 appearances.
Mitchell received the largest bonus of this group, earning $5,000 after being taken 193rd overall — with a pick valuation of $330,300. The 22-year-old infielder spent four seasons at the University of Iowa, hitting .360/.452/.535 with five home runs, 43 RBIs and a career-high 134 wRC+ (100 league average) in 56 games this year.
Bennett is taking home the smallest bonus of this group, signing for $1,000 as the 252nd selection in the draft — a tiny portion of his $219,500 slot value. The 21-year-old catcher is coming off a career year with Dallas Baptist University, posting 19 home runs and 53 RBIs with a .346/.475/.776 slash line and a 178 wRC+, nearly recording as many walks (30) as strikeouts (38) over 43 games.
Urban and Chance signed for $2,500 each after being chosen as the 282nd ($202,100 slot value) and 312th ($191,900 slot value) picks, respectively. The first of those two spent two seasons at Butler University before transferring to the University of Southern Mississippi for his final two collegiate years, while the latter played all four seasons at Mississippi State University.
These savings will help Toronto — which entered the draft with the second-smallest signing bonus pool ($5,543,100) of any team, ahead of only the Los Angeles Dodgers ($3,951,900), by having their first-round selection pushed back 10 places and forfeiting a second-round pick after signing qualified free agent Dylan Cease last winter — sign fourth-rounder Will Brick, selected 131st overall out of Christian Brothers HS, who’ll command well above his allotted $581,100 slot value to forgo his committment to MSU.
