The Toronto Blue Jays have a new second baseman.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual 40-man Roster Review, where we look at the players on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster. We’ll look at how the player performed in 2024, his season projections for the 2025 season, and any storylines heading into this coming season. In this article, we’ll look at Andrés Giménez.
On Dec. 10, the Blue Jays traded Spencer Horwitz and prospect Nick Mitchell to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for Giménez and reliever Nick Sandlin. The 2024 season wasn’t great for Giménez with the bat, slashing .252/.298/.340 with nine home runs in 633 plate appearances for an 83 wRC+ and a 2.8 fWAR.
Defensively, Giménez was one of the best infielders in the league though, posting 20 Defensive Runs Saved and 19 Outs Above Average in 1331 innings played at the keystone. In the past three seasons, his 59 DRS and 49 OAA are the best for any second basemen in the league, while his DRS is outright tops for any infielder.
There’s more to the bat as well. In his first full season back in 2022, Giménez slashed ..297/.371/.466 with 17 home runs in 557 plate appearances for a 6.1 fWAR and a 141 wRC+. If the Jays can get that kind of production in 2025 and beyond, it will significantly bolster their postseason chances.
Unfortunately, his projections by Fangraphs aren’t nearly that good, albeit they are better than his past two seasons. Steamer projects he’ll slash .263/.317/.394 with 13 home runs in 609 plate appearances for a 104 wRC+ and a 3.5. Another projection model, OOPSY, projects he’ll slash .252/.314/.384 with 12 home runs in 630 plate appearances for a 100 wRC+ and a 3.4 fWAR.
The storyline for Giménez coming into the season is whether or not he can find the form he had in 2022 with the Guardians. If he can, he’ll become one of the Blue Jays most important players as they attempt to contend in 2025. Time will tell how well he does.
