Another free agent option for the Toronto Blue Jays is off the market.
It was reported Wednesday evening that the Boston Red Sox have signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal that comes with two opt-outs.
Bregman was the last big bat remaining in free agency as he slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs in 634 plate appearances with the Houston Astros last season. With that being said, he hasn’t been the elite player he was in 2018 and 2019. His 2019 season in particular was the best season of his career, as he slashed .296/.423/.592 with 41 home runs in 690 plate appearances for a 167 wRC+. He has yet to hit 30 since then.
Although he’s not the same player he was six years ago, Bregman is still good and helps the Red Sox get even better. The American League East team now has an infield that consists of Rafael Devers, Trevor Story, Bregman, and Triston Casas. On top of that, they have the best farm system in baseball, featuring three players (Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer) in the top 12 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospect list.
The options on the market for the Blue Jays are limited now. If they’re looking for another power bat, J.D. Martinez is their best bet as he slashed .235/.320/.406 with 16 home runs in 495 plate appearances last season for the New York Mets. That wasn’t a great season for the 37-year-old, but he slashed .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs in 479 plate appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023.
Of course, there is also the option for a trade. The Blue Jays have a ton of MLB-ready prospects and they could trade from their surplus for a position of need. Although he’d cost more than just a handful of MLB-ready prospects, a good trade target for the Blue Jays is Luis Robert Jr., who had a tough season in 2024 with the Chicago White Sox. However, had 38 home runs in 2023. Another intriguing option is Miami Marlins’ outfielder Jesús Sánchez.
With days until Spring Training, the Blue Jays need to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but adding another bat is rather important if they wish to contend in 2025.
