There are a handful of left-handed batting outfielders in the Toronto Blue Jays’ farm system.
One of the closest of the bunch is RJ Schreck. The Blue Jays acquired the 26-year-old before the 2024 trade deadline and he’s been one of the more productive hitters in the system for parts of the last few seasons.
Although Schreck ranked as our ninth-best Blue Jays’ prospect heading into the season, he’s dropped to the 24th-spot in the 2026 mid-season rankings due to missing a large portion of the season and taking a step back. Schreck was selected in the ninth-round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners out of Vanderbilt, joining the Mariners’ Single-A team to end the 2023 season. Over 25 games, Schreck slashed .267/.343/.378 with one home run in 102 plate appearances, hitting another one in the Arizona Complex League.
The outfielder debuted with the Mariners’ High-A team to begin the 2024 season, slashing .261/.401/.464 with 12 home runs in 344 plate appearances. Schreck also had a higher BB% (16.6%) than K% (13.7%) in this stint. Before the trade, Schreck played eight games with the Mariners’ Double-A team.
On July 29th, 2024, the Blue Jays sent Justin Turner to the Mariners for Schreck. Finishing his season with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the outfielder slashed .255/.377/.521 with five home runs in 114 plate appearances.
He repeated the level to begin the 2025 season, slashing .266/.396/.518 with nine home runs over 169 plate appearances. That earned him a promotion to Triple-A, where he hit nine more home runs over 234 plate appearances for a season wRC+ of 143.
On the cusp of a call-up, Schreck took a step back in 2026, slashing .227/.379/.400 with seven home runs in 232 plate appearances with the Bisons, good for a 113 wRC+. In early June, Schreck went down with an injury and didn’t return until early September, where he hit two more home runs on a rehab assignment with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays.
There’s some pop in his bat, though it’s not his best tool. Instead, Schreck is a solid hitter with a good eye at the plate and solid game plan, hence his high walk rate and low walk rate throughout his career. He’s not particularly fast, at least on the bases, but has played all three outfield spots throughout his career.
Schreck is Rule 5 eligible at the end of the season, meaning that the Blue Jays must add him to the 40-man roster to guarantee that he remains in the organization. It’s similar to Yohendrick Piñango’s situation last season, but with the injury and profile, Schreck is unlikely to be selected.
