Anthony Kay, T.J. Zeuch will be part of September call-ups

Two young pitchers on the verge of making the big leagues and in talks to be part of the 2020 Blue Jays rotation are going to be part of the September call-ups with rosters expanding.

Kay, 24, was part of the return for Marcus Stroman from the New York Mets and has been able to completely dominate for Triple-A Buffalo since coming over to the Toronto organization. Through seven starts and a total of 36 innings pitched, Kay has been able to keep a 2.50 ERA while striking-out 9.8 batters per nine.

He’s been struggling with the control since being promoted up to the highest minor-league level, averaging 5.5 walks per nine with Buffalo and 3.16 BB/9 while still in the Mets organization. All will be tested once he makes his major-league debut later this month.

Zeuch was a first-round selection by the Blue Jays back in 2016 and at 24-years-old, he should be nearing a big-league opportunity anyway and has certainly earned that. Highlighted by a no-hitter a couple weeks ago, his first season in Triple-A has featured a total of 13 starts with 78 innings pitched and he has been able to have an ERA of 3.69.

The main thing with Zeuch is his ability get groundballs at a high rate. This season with the Bisons, he has a 57.1 GB% and just last season for High-A Dunedin, he was able to get an astronomical 62.2 GB%. Hope the young infield of the Jays are ready for a lot of balls coming their way.

Both pitchers had to be put on the 40-man roster before next season anyway, or else they would be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this December. This cements their position and rewards them with an opportunity to shine at the highest level and pencil in their own name for next year’s pitching staff.

With Kay, Zeuch, and most likely Pearson added later in the season, the 2020 staff could feature a lot of young talent with high-ceilings and potential to make management and fans salivate and some impressive depth on both sides of the mound.

Outfielders Anthony Alford, Jonathan Davis, and infielder Richard Urena, are also expected to get the promotion this month.
