Blue Jays 5, Mariners 2: The comeback kids are back

It didn’t look good for a little while there, but the April Blue Jays that score a whole bunch of runs in the final couple innings of the game are BACK.

Things worth mentioning

  • The best part of the game, of course, was the eighth inning rally. The Jays threatened multiple times but couldn’t get a run across and it appeared tonight was going to be one of those frustrating limp games where they should of but didn’t. But they did! The Jays teed off on Juan Nicasio, putting together a double-double-double-single (but almost a double but throw out at second base)-double-strikeout-single (that turned into a double because of an errant throw) rally. I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw this team put together a four-run explosion like that without hitting a homer. It was pretty cool to watch.
  • Part of what made the stranded runners prior to the eighth inning rally so frustrating was this goddamn fan who fucked Toescar Hernandez out of hitting a triple in the sixth inning. Hernandez was sent back to second which sucked because Yangervis Solarte hit a fly ball that would have scored him from third base to tie the game.
  • Jaime Garcia was solid today, going five innings and scattering two runs on three hits and five walks which was, uh, concerning. Regardless, Garcia was able to navigate the problems he created for himself which wasn’t happening in his last few outings. Even better, though, was Toronto’s ‘pen, which was nails. Oh, Axford, Tepera, and Clippard each tossed a scoreless inning allowing the Jays to come back and pick up the win late. The Jays are still undefeated in 2018 when scoring five or more runs which I think is a testament to how good the bullpen has been for them.
