This one is personal to me because the prospect we’re looking at today was present at the first showcase I attended.
Just a quick recap of the mid-season list: We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and finally other publications (Prospects Live, MLB Pipeline, Baseball America) scouting reports.
In this article, we’ll look at the recently drafted Sam Shaw!

Getting to know Sam Shaw…

Position: Centre field/Second base/Shortstop
Bats: Right
Born: February 26, 2005
Acquired: 9th round, 2023 MLB Draft (Blue Jays)
Current Team: FCL Blue Jays
Previous Ranking: Not ranked
In terms of statistics, there’s not much to go off of because the 18-year-old has only played a couple of games professionally. With the FCL Jays, Shaw is slashing .333/.429/.333 without a single walk or strikeout. He’s been hit by a pitch once, and the two hits he has are both singles.
From what I saw at the Canadian Futures Showcase, he has quick bat speed and can hit the ball anywhere in the zone. He is a good runner with good instincts on the bases (he is 0/1 in stolen base attempts). Defensively, he has only played second base and centre field in his short time in the organization. However, he was playing shortstop at the showcase. He has soft hands and is quick with his feet, but he’ll likely play second and/or centre field in the future.
Prep players take a while to develop, especially those in the later rounds. For example, Davis Schneider was selected in the 28th round of the 2017 draft, and only broke out in 2022 (and became noticed by everyone in 2023). Barger is another example, he was selected in the sixth round in 2018, and only broke out in 2022.
It’s my belief that sometime in the future, Sam Shaw has a legitimate chance to reach most publications’ Top 30 lists, but it will take a few years and nothing is guaranteed. Still, the Jays may have gotten a steal with this year’s ninth-round pick.

Next up:

The next prospect is a guy that always ranks around the backend of my Top 50, but he’s having a heck of a season. Stay tuned!
