The Toronto Blue Jays have announced a roster move, and no, it doesn’t involve top prospect Gabriel Moreno. At least, for now. Instead, the team has placed reliever Andrew Vasquez on the 15-day injured list with a right ankle sprain.
Additionally, with Vasquez headed to the IL, Toronto has recalled right-hander Jeremy Beasley from triple-A Buffalo. The 26-year-old will be active for Friday’s series opener in Detroit versus the Tigers.
Vasquez, 28, injured his ankle while covering first base during the club’s 8-4 defeat against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. He was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and underwent further testing afterwards.
The 6’6″ left-hander, who signed a one-year deal with the Blue Jays over the off-season, has posted an 8.10 ERA and a 5.99 FIP across 6.2 innings in nine appearances this season. He spent the 2021 campaign inside the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.
On a Moreno-related note, while he won’t be active in Friday’s opener, the expectation is he’ll be placed on the active roster either Saturday or Sunday, according to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
The Blue Jays currently sit third in the American League East Division and hold the second wild-card seed with a 33-23 record in 2022.
