Scott Mitchell of TSN reported on Tuesday morning that two Blue Jays pitching prospects, Trent Palmer and Joey Murray, underwent Tommy John surgery during the 2022 season.
Palmer was Toronto’s third-round pick from the 2020 draft. He put up a 3.00 ERA over 16 starts in his first professional season in 2021 with the Low-A Dunedin Blue Jays. In 2021, he started off with High-A Vancouver and posted a 4.18 ERA over six starts and got called up to Double-A New Hampshire in May.
Palmer made seven starts with the Fisher Cats and had a 3.69 ERA. On July 1, he put together his strongest outing of the season, striking out nine batters over five-and-two-thirds of shutout innings against the Portland Sea Dogs. Palmer went on the Injured List after that outing and didn’t make another start for the rest of the season.
Murray was the Blue Jays’ eighth-round selection in the 2018 draft. In his first full professional season in 2019, Murray moved from Low-A to High-A to Double-A and posted a 2.75 ERA over 137 1/3 innings across the three levels.
Since then, Murray’s progression has been completely derailed due to injury. He made just one appearance in 2021 in Rookie Ball and threw 20 2/3 innings in 2022 in Double-A. He allowed eight earned runs over three-and-one-third innings on May 3 and underwent Tommy John surgery later that month.
Mitchell also noted that CJ Van Eyk, Toronto’s second-round pick from the 2020 draft, is expected to be ready to go for the 2023 season after having Tommy John surgery last year. Van Eyk put up a 5.83 ERA over in 19 starts in his first and only professional season with Vancouver in 2021.
