Blue Jays select Derek Law to the roster, DFA Alen Hanson

The Alen Hanson Utility Experiment is over. The Toronto Blue Jays announced Friday evening that they have selected pitcher Derek Law to the major league roster and have designated Alen Hanson for assignment.

Both players were acquired in the Kevin Pillar trade to the Giants, Hanson making the immediate leap and Law taking his talents to Triple-A Buffalo.

There, he pitched a total of 10.2 innings — posting a 1.69 ERA in relief and totalling 17 strikeouts with only three walks allowed.

The 28-year-old joins a bullpen that has been devastated with injury since the beginning of the season and is starting to see some of its regular members come back.

In the majors with the Giants, Law has 105.2 IP under his belt with a 3.83 ERA, 1.287 WHIP, and a 8.1 K/9 rate.

With Alen Hanson heading to Buffalo, his reign of terror in the outfield and elsewhere is over. Most recently known for being Vlad’s pinch runner and making some terrible defensive errors, his talents seem destined to be in the minors.

The 26-year-old utility player had a devestating .392 OPS while with the Jays in 28 plate appearances. It was actually impressive how quickly he was able to post a -0.4 WAR, according to FanGraphs.

Whether this means a certain prospect that rhymes with Lavan Tiggio is getting the call-up anytime soon, is still unsure. But if he continues his dominance and shows that his bat does not belong in the minor leagues any more, he might be seeing some time sooner rather than later.
