Things worth mentioning…

• • First and foremost, we’ll talk about Shoemaker. Shoemaker tossed three scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out one. The last out he recorded came in the third inning while involved in a rundown with Matt Chapman. Shoemaker was pulled from the game immediately and has since been diagnosed with a left knee sprain. His injury was much similar to the one Brett Cecil suffered back in Game 2 of the 2015 ALDS against Texas. This is a really, really shitty blow for Shoemaker, who has been incredible so far this season. Toronto’s off-season reclamation project has a sparkling 1.57 ERA through five starts and is pitching his best since he earned Rookie of the Year consideration back in 2014. There’s a heartbreaking video of a visibly angry Shoemaker getting treated by Blue Jays staff. Obviously, anybody is going to be pissed about getting hurt on a play like that, but it stings even more for Shoemaker given how tough a time he’s had with injuries in the past.

• Other than that, everything in today’s game went really well. The Jays exploded for 10 runs, including a three-run homer from Rowdy Tellez, a two-run homer from Justin Smoak, and a solo bomb from Brandon Drury. Drury, who had really been fighting it this year, now has homers in back-to-back games. He also clubbed an RBI double in the fifth inning after his homer.
• Sammy G came in and locked things down after Shoemaker left the game. He tossed four perfect innings while also collecting five strikeouts. The Jays will need somebody to fill into the rotation for Shoemaker, I imagine, and Sammy G along with Thomas Pannone are two internal options already on the 25-man roster who could fill the gig.
• Freddy Galvis continued his good play with a two-for-five day at the plate, but his best moment came in the eighth inning when he made this inside, over-the-head barehanded catch to rob Josh Phegley of a bloop single.

• Also, ace reliever Kendrys Morales came into the game to pitch the ninth inning for the A’s. Unlike last year when he shut down Oakland while pitching for the Jays in a blowout, Morales surrendered a run to his former team.
