The Toronto Blue Jays have a couple of reinforcements on the way.
With Major League roster sizes expanding from 26 to 28 at the beginning of September, the Blue Jays will reportedly be calling up Spencer Horwitz and Chad Green to join the team ahead of their weekend series with the Colorado Rockies.
Green is a veteran reliever working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He posted a 2.95 ERA across 246 appearances in the New York Yankees’ bullpen between 2017 and 2021 and the Blue Jays signed him to a contract with multiple team options when he reached free agency last winter.
The 32-year-old right-hander underwent surgery last June and started his rehab assignment just over one year later. Green has allowed only one earned run across 12 appearances between Low-A Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo since returning.
Horwitz is coming up for the second time this season. Toronto’s 24th-round pick from the 2019 draft made his big-league debut with the Blue Jays back in June and went 2-for-8 with an RBI and a couple of walks.
The Blue Jays added Horwtiz to their 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft last winter following a season in which he hit .275 and produced a .843 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A. This season with the Bisons, Horwitz has slashed a .337/.450/.495 line with 78 walks and 72 strikeouts. Across July and August, he had a .394 batting average and a 1.141 OPS.
Green will give the Blue Jays another option in an already incredibly deep bullpen while having Horwitz on the roster will help the team navigate having Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman on the Injured List at the same time. Horwitz mostly plays first base but has also played second base and left field this year.
