After being designated for assignment earlier this week, Jason Grilli has found a new home. The Blue Jays are sending the veteran righty to Texas in exchange for prospect Eduard Pinto.
Obviously it’s going to be a little gross seeing our beloved Grilli play for the shitty Rangers, but this deal is very good. It’s great that Grilli, a really likeable player and person, is getting another shot somewhere. It’s even better that the Jays are getting an asset for Grilli rather than losing him for nothing.
Pinto, an outfielder signed out of Venezuela by Texas back in 2011, is currently playing for the Down East Wood Ducks, the Rangers’ High-A team. He hasn’t been ranked on Baseball America’s Top Prospects list, doesn’t have very many in-depth scouting reports floating around, and is a 22-year-old playing in high-A.
With the Wood Ducks this season, Pinto is slashing a .311/.358/.446 line, close to the best numbers he’s produced in his career. Obviously Pinto isn’t a game changing prospect, but like I said, getting something for Grilli is better than nothing.
Best of luck, Jason. Hopefully you can continue getting fired up and in the process make the Rangers a little more likeable.
