Charlie Montoyo sounds off after yet another bullpen meltdown

2 years agoAnother day, another meltdown from the bullpen.
Hyun Jin Ryu started for the Blue Jays on Tuesday against the New York Yankees and worked his way through six innings while allowing three earned runs. It was far from Ryu’s best outing but it was good enough for the Blue Jays to earn a win, as they scored five runs off of Yankee starter Jordan Montgomery.
After Ryu came out, the wheels completely fell off. Here’s how it went down…
- Anthony Castro allowed a solo homer to Brett Gardener and a double to DJ LeMahieu. He struck out Aaron Judge, threw a wild pitch that allowed LeMahieu to score, and then walked Gleyber Torres. That was it for Castro.
- Next up, Carl Edwards Jr. came into the game and got Giancarlo Stanton to fly out. He then left the game with an injury. Tim Mayza then came in and walked Gio Urshela but got Gary Sanchez to ground out to end the inning.
- Mayza stayed in for the eighth inning and allowed a single to Miguel Andujar and then struck out Chris Gittens. Jordan Romano then came into the game and allowed Clint Fraizer to drive in the go-ahead run on a double. He would get LeMahieu and Judge out after that.
- The one positive is that Tyler Chatwood had a nearly clean ninth, working around his own error to get through the ninth.
- So, all told, it took the Blue Jays five different pitchers to record nine outs and they allowed three runs on four hits and two walks.
After the game, Charlie Montoyo sounded off on his bullpen’s most recent meltdown…
“It’s been every fucking month, I mean, the whole month about the same thing. … This is who we’ve got, and we’re going to trust them. This is who we’ve got,” Montoyo said. “We’re here to win games. It’s been frustrating because we have been playing good baseball. It’s just that when your bullpen struggles, nothing is going to work.”
The reality for Montoyo and the Blue Jays is that pretty much nobody is getting the job done in the bullpen right now. The team has lost three games in the past week when leading after six innings. One day it’s Chatwood melting down, next it’s Rafael Dolis, then it’s Castro.
Getting names like Ryan Borucki, Julian Merryweather, Patrick Murphy, and Thomas Hatch back from injury could be a big help, but it does seem that the only way the Blue Jays can solve their bullpen woes is by going external and making some trades. The challenge is that everyone in the league is aware that Toronto’s ‘pen is costing them a couple of games a week and they’re going to sit back and try to fleece them as soon as they come asking.
