Another pitcher bites the dust. Before making his first start as a Blue Jay, Clayton Richard has suffered a knee injury and won’t be available for a few weeks. Sean Reid-Foley will join the club on Monday and start in place of Richard in the Blue Jays’ series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
Reid-Foley had a rough spring training and ultimately lost out to Trent Thornton for the final spot in the team’s starting rotation. Reid-Foley tossed 15 innings in spring, surrendering 14 runs on 14 hits and eight walks while striking out 13. He also made seven starts with the team last season, posting a 5.13 ERA. The key for Reid-Foley is command. His stuff is electric, but he struggles to command the zone and can implode quickly. Facing a shitty-ass team like Baltimore will be a nice way for Reid-Foley to start swimming in the shallow end to build some confidence.
It seems the roster move will inevitably be Richard hitting the 10-day Injured List, opening up room to add Reid-Foley to the 25-man roster. Richard would join Ryan Borucki, Clay Buchholz, David Phelps, and Ryan Tepera as pitchers currently on the Injured List. Also, the Jays have John Axford and Bud Norris on minor league deals without Major League contracts.
Speaking of Buchholz and and Borucki, both pitchers are expected to join the team before the end of April.
