Move over Devon Travis, there’s a new sheriff in town. With news of his most recent injury, Dalton Pompey has taken over the throne as the least-fortunate Blue Jay. Pompey has been diagnosed with a concussion and is now in Major League Baseball’s concussion protocol.
Pompey was scratched from yesterday’s grapefruit game against the Phillies because he hit his head on some bats in his locker. I guess this falls under the absurd ways to injure yourself category (like Aaron Sanchez and his infamous luggage issue last year) but given Pompey’s history with concussions, it really isn’t a laughing matter.
This is Pompey’s third concussion. He suffered one in 2016 running into an outfield wall and he suffered another one in 2017 playing for Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic. The one in 2017 derailed his entire season, as he would play just 13 games between Single- and Triple-A.
Prior to the injury, Pompey was on the bubble to crack the roster. He’s out of options and was vying for a spot on the team over either Billy McKinney or Teoscar Hernandez. There was also talk that the Jays wanted to showcase Pompey to possibly get something back in a trade before having to put him on waivers prior to the season.
