Boom! Just like that there are two more reasons to pay attention to Blue Jays games. Catcher Danny Jansen has been recalled and Sean Reid-Foley is going to join him and make his first Major League start on Monday.
Yangervis Solarte, who’s been nightmarishly bad at the plate recently, has been placed on the disabled list and Jansen has been called up in his place. It seems Russell Martin will play a bunch of third base in place of Solarte while Jansen gets a good look behind the plate. Jansen, a 16th round pick from 2013, has slashed a .285/.396/.488 line in 109 career Triple-A games and appears to be Toronto’s catcher of the future.
Sean Reid-Foley has had a ridiculously good season between Double- and Triple-A after sort of falling off the prospect map in 2017. In Double-A, he produced a 2.03 ERA in eight starts earning him the call to Triple-A where he owns a 3.50 ERA through 15 starts. Drafted in the second round in 2014, Reid-Foley has a legit chance to crack Toronto’s rotation next season if things go well for him down the stretch.
We don’t yet know who will go down to open up room for Reid-Foley, but I imagine it’ll be Thomas Pannone, his Buffalo Bisons teammate. He isn’t currently on the 40-man roster, so the Jays will need to designate somebody in order to open up room for Reid-Foley.
