The Blue Jays have a chance to earn a series win with the New York Yankees and bring all of us a little further away from the ledge. The second wild card, while sorta within striking distance, is very far away, though wins against teams like the Yankees, Rays, and Royals — all teams they’ll see down the stretch — are critical in this run.

And now, the lineups…

Blue Jays

Marco Estrada: 5.12 ERA, 128 1/3 IP, 9.0 H9, 1.5 HR9, 3.7 BB9, 9.4 SO9

Yankees

Sonny Gray: 3.41 ERA, 103 IP, 7.7 H9, 0.7 HR9, 2.9 BB9, 8.7 SO9
The Jays saw Sonny Gray in his last start as a member of the Oakland Athletics before he was freed from his chains to play meaningful baseball with the New York Yankees. In that start, Gray was good, going six innings while surrendering four runs, all of them unearned. In his first start with New York, Gray again was let down by his defence, getting charged for four runs, only two earned, over six innings pitched.
He’ll go against Marco Estrada who seems to have broken out of his mid-season funk. In his last two starts, Estrada has surrendered just four earned runs total over 14 innings, reaching seven innings in back-to-back outings for the first time all season.
Another note, the #MakeKevinPillarEightAgain thing worked out, as John Gibbons has pushed the struggling Pillar down to the No. 8 hole in the lineup, where he tends to do very well. Another last-second change, Zeke will fill in right field and Jose Bautista will slide into the DH spot as Kendrys Morales is out with an illness.
