It’s bump day for The Big Man in The Big Apple and boy, should it be a fun one.
Alek Manoah has previously done very well on the road in Yankee Stadium and today, he’s going to have a chance to right his game. It’s been a far-from-ideal start to the season for Manoah. He got the start on opening day and struggled against the St. Louis Cardinals, and hasn’t looked right in other starts against Kansas City, Detroit nor Tampa Bay.
As Paul Berthelot noted this morning, Manoah’s having struggles adjusting to the pitch clock and with his command. Given that this pitch clock won’t be going anywhere anytime soon he’s going to have to adjust his game sooner, rather than later.
In Yankee Stadium, he’s 2-0 across four starts having posted a 1.52 ERA, and a 0.972 WHIP allowing just 12 hits across 23.2 IP. The Jays have no choice but to be patient with Manoah’s game as he adjusts to the new rules this season, and truth be told, some regression in his game was likely to come this season too.
He’s still just 25 years old, is coming off an all-star-level season, and has never had to throw this much in his career. The most he had ever thrown in his career previously was at West Virginia when he threw 108.1 IP — numbers he’s surpassed with ease over the last two seasons.
But today, on the back of another tremendous start by Yusei Kikuchi, we get to see if Manoah can right the ship. Given how firey these matchups have been in the past — and given the fact we know how much Manoah loves the emotions of the game — this could wind up being a fun one this afternoon.
