The Toronto Blue Jays made a few roster moves before the start of the series against the Seattle Mariners.
On Friday evening, it was announced by the team that they placed Andres Gimenez on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to May 8th. To replace him in the infield, the Blue Jays added Michael Stefanic to the 40-man and the 26-man roster. The Jays made room on the 40-man roster by designating Dillon Tate for assignment.
Stefanic’s story is a good example of why you never give up. Undrafted out of college, Stefanic was already practicing law after failing to attract offers with his three-minute highlight tape. That was until the Los Angeles Angels needed a minor league infielder. There’s a great article from Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling that you can read about his journey to making it to the minor leagues.
The Jays signed him to a minor-league deal this offseason. With the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, he’s slashed .319/.454/.372 with no home runs in 119 plate appearances for a 142 wRC+. Stefanic has experience in the big leagues, slashing .232/.317/.275 with no home runs in parts of three seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, the team that signed him back in 2018.
As for Tate, the 31-year-old righty has struggled in the big leagues this season, giving up three earned runs in five and one-third innings pitched for a 5.06 ERA and a 6.86 FIP. He hasn’t looked like his 2022 self, when he had a 3.05 ERA and a 3.48 FIP in 73.2 innings pitched. Time will tell if any team claims him off waivers or whether or not he elects to stick around.
After Gimenez’s great start to the season, he’s petered off. Since April 1, Gimenez has slashed .173/.240/.200 with no home runs in 121 plate appearances, stealing eight of eight bases. All three home runs came in March, although he was slashing .368/.368/.421 in May before suffering his injury on Wednesday.
Since they retroactively placed him on the Injured List, there appears to be a chance that Gimenez will be activated on May 18th, the first day he’ll be eligible to come off the IL.
