Things worth mentioning…

• The Toronto Blue Jays are undefeated in 2021, while the New York Yankees remain winless. Does this make the Blue Jays World Series favourites? I mean, you certainly have to ask the question.
• Anthony Kay got the start for the Blue Jays and looked very good. Remember, when it comes to Spring Training, when a guy is doing well, it means that they’re going to have a breakout season, but when they’re doing poorly, it doesn’t mean anything. Those are the rules. Anyway, Kay was excellent over two innings of work, but, unfortunately Charlie Montoyo didn’t allow him to go the distance to pitch a perfect game. The interesting thing with Kay on Sunday afternoon was the extra zip on his pitches. He was hitting as high as 97 miles-per-hour, which is well above the 96.3 mph fastball he averaged last year. All aboard the Anthony Kay for Cy Young train!

• After Kay came T.J. Zeuch, a guy who we’ve heard the organization rave about based on his work at the Alternate Training Site in Rochester last summer. Zeuch looked OK, allowing one run on two hits over two innings. He didn’t strike anybody out, which is the worrying part of his profile as a pitcher. It’s sort of difficult to imagine a pitch-to-contact guy in baseball’s new world of fielding independent pitching, but a guy who can keep the ball on the ground could be helpful.
• Jacob Waguespack came in next and got slammed for three earned runs while recording just one out. Anthony Castro, Joey Murray, and Bryan Baker closed the door for the final two-and-one-third after Waguespack.
• Finally, some notes from the offence… Bo Bichette looked much more calm and patient at the plate than he did for most of 2020. Bo walked just five times while striking out 27 times last season, which was somewhat worrying, but he said earlier this week he’s trying to be more patient at the plate. He walked twice in two at bats. Rowdy Tellez also had a big day offensively, smacking a single and a two-run double. Also, Thin Vlad’s off-season workout plan was immediately noticeable as he ripped home from second on a single.
