For the first time since 2018, the Blue Jays won a series in Seattle.
Tens of thousands of Canadian fans made the trip across the border for the annual Takeover of T-Mobile Park and the Blue Jays rewarded them with wins over the American League West-leading Mariners on Saturday and Sunday.
José Berríos got the start in the rubber match for Toronto on Sunday and the right-hander allowed four runs over six innings of work. All four of those runs came on two swings of the bat, a solo home run by Victor Robles and a three-run bomb by Mitch Garver. Berríos struck out a season-high 10 batters and only walked one.
The Mariners had a 4-1 lead after Garver’s home run in the fifth but a three-run homer from George Springer in the seventh brought them right back into the game.
Seattle starter George Kirby allowed only one run through six innings and he came out for the seventh and was pulled after letting Alejandro Kirk and Leo Jiménez reach on singles. Ryne Stanek came into the game and struck out Kevin Kiermaier and then Springer smashed his 10th homer of the season over the wall in right-centre field.
The Blue Jays pulled ahead 5-4 in the 10th inning when Daulton Varsho came through with a two-out single that scored ghost-runner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from second base. Since defacto closer Chad Green had pitched in the bottom of the ninth inning, Genesis Cabrera came in for the save in Seattle’s half of the 10th. He allowed a single and a walk to load the bases but got Cal Raleigh to fly out to end the game.
Just watch the fans rise with Cabby 😉 #TOTHECORE
That was Toronto’s first series win since they took two of three from the Cleveland Guardians at home in mid-June. The Blue Jays will look to keep this momentum going as they head to San Francisco for a rare series at Oracle Park with the Giants. Both teams will be off on Monday and will begin a three-game set on Tuesday.
